Darren Cross has been mastering, tearing apart and abandoning genres for over two decades, most notably as a founder member of Gerling.
So it's a joy to hear him (as Dep) now smoking like Nick Drake and crooning like a youthful Leonard Cohen. His brooding ying is elegantly yanged by Jessica Cassar's honeyed vocals and the production remains simply hollowed, often harrowingly dark. The imperfectly tuned piano on Helpless City, the modern-gothic Poor Little Rich Kids; it definitely sounds - as is claimed - to be the product of recording almost exclusively in the early hours of the morning.
