High-tails' debut A Slight Hi situates them firmly in the increasingly crowded genre of slangy suburban surf rock.
What sets them apart is their crisp, clear production, proclivity for ironic melodrama and the occasional image that catches you off guard. On Sushi Train, one character laments: "The weekends and the weekdays are always the same / Everyday, staring blankly down the sushi train". Sonically, the scenery is familiar - sun-drenched backyards and suburban beaches, stubbies nearby - but never repetitive. This is no easy feat for an album so interested in representing boredom.
