The Fowler’s Live Music Awards were a gorgeous affair

More Bad//Dreems More Bad//Dreems

The inaugural Fowler’s Live Music Awards was nothing short of a great success. Created by venue owner and long-time industry stalwart Peter Darwin the event exists quite simply to provide hard-working artists and industry persons behind stellar management or music-related initiatives with some well-deserved recognition whilst also allowing musicians and industry folks alike to let their hair down and reflect positively on the year’s achievements in a fun red carpet environment. With plenty of opportunities to mingle and network or simply just take in the vibe and have a party, the Fowler’s Live Music Awards were a gorgeous affair and a high-energy melting pot that left people buzzing well after its conclusion.

The emphasis was on a smoothly running event, and run smoothly it did! With the sun still shining at 6pm there were already scores of people flowing in and out of Fowler’s. Between a free BBQ that was cooked to perfection and some complimentary beverages there was plenty to occupy oneself with between the performances and the award ceremony. Whether it be the co-producer of the award-nominated TV show, Music Room, or rising star Tkay Maidza, there were a tonne of friendly faces, and it was exemplary in showing just how vibrant, and dare I say cool, the Adelaide music scene is.

Seminal rock act Bad//Dreems, who took out Best Rock Artist and Best Songwriter awards, warmed the audience up before the awards ceremony began, showing off their increased performance experience off the back of a recent US tour, playing more confidently and dynamically than ever. As one of the only artists to take out multiple awards on the night, and with an upcoming national support slot touring with The Black Keys this band is shooting for the moon but will more than likely reach the stars! The award ceremony itself was short and sweet with the nominees of each category being read out and then the winner recognised. There were no acceptance speeches allowed, keeping things running smoothly.

Another Peter Darwin initiative is the National Campus Band Competition, which is one of the largest and longest running of its kind. Alternative powerhouse, Slick Arnold, made it to the finals in Sydney this year and so were invited to perform at the event. These guys are going to blow up; it’s a case of when rather than if. Granted one song, the three-piece burst onto the stage like a glass bottle exploding in the freezer with a vehement crack. Jack Crawford and Mitchell Craddock threw themselves about the stage while performing lead single, Dinosaurs, from this year’s EP, One.

Peter Darwin closed the ceremony with an inspirational speech. Dropping many an F-bomb he spoke freely about his history in the music scene and the fate of Fowler’s Live. He must ultimately be recognised as the man who keeps the venue alive and as someone who is passionate about live music being heard by upcoming generations. The evening concluded on a genuine high.
