"They combined psych, indie rock, grunge and shoegaze to produce something dreamy, something magical."
Crown & Anchor is an Adelaide live music scene establishment. It's seen and heard a plethora of bands over the decades. Tonight hosts Melbourne four-piece Flyying Colours. After a successful European and Chinese tour, they finally hit local shores to promote their wonderful, recently released debut album, Mindfullness. This is on the back of two great EPs released in 2014 and 2015.
Local Adelaideans Blush Response opened what was guaranteed to be a shoegaze frenzy! Having only discovered them this year, this reviewer was keen to get intimate with their discordant guitar tones and pop overtones, all within a shoegaze framework. They only have two EPs out at the moment, but be sure to dive head first into these on Bandcamp. They were brilliant tonight and, while their retro sound can easily be compared to '90s shoegaze legends My Bloody Valentine (distortion was their best friend!), they are clearly looking and moving forward with their sound.
Flyying Colours are currently my favourite band. It is also too obvious to compare them to the '90s bands. They combined psych, indie rock, grunge and shoegaze to produce something dreamy, something magical. What worked superbly well for the band was the male/female vocal mix. The Cranker bandroom might be small, but it's perfect for this style of music and was filled to the brim. We were taken off to shoegaze heaven. Check Flyying Colours out immediately if you haven't already!
