"Cub Sport do a great job pushing through, but inevitably have to cut their set short."
Angie McMahon shares her soulful blend of folk-pop tunes and refreshing onstage banter to break the ice. "Sorry that all my songs are so sad," she apologies and assures us that she's actually quite a happy person as she stands there in her Mickey Mouse T-shirt with a big smile. On a side note, she says she's pretty devastated about reaching 100% of her mobile data plan today and we can totally relate. McMahon's sweet, angelic vocals are captivating and soothing. She shares a new song with a Taylor Swift-esque, 'fuck you, boy that I broke up with' kind of vibe as she unleashes vengeful heartbreak through her personal lyrics.
Fellow Brisbane act Clea is up next, featuring Clea Pratt (one half of indie-pop band Zefereli). Clea's strong, alluring quality draws us in and gets underneath our skin. They share an enchanting cover of Crimson And Clover, which Pratt excitedly tells us has recently been featured on the Foxtel TV series The Kettering Incident. Their own original song Dire Consequences has a dark and haunting style featuring their clever and complex songwriting, complemented by mesmerising vocals.
"Go, Cub Sport!" Tim Nelson calls out to get the fans even more excited. They launch into their bright new track Sun, but the shine quickly starts to fade. As Nelson picks up his vapour inhaler, he tells us that he's not confident he'll be able to get through the whole set as he is losing his voice. The band make a quick adjustment to their set and give us a couple of tracks to break a few adoring fans' hearts including Come On Mess Me Up and a brilliant cover of Kanye West's Ultralight Beam. Despite Nelson's ailment, Cub Sport do a great job pushing through, but inevitably have to cut their set short. Fans hold onto the hope that they'll be back to finish off soon.
