Live Review: Craig David

"Time may have passed but David hasn’t missed a beat and his vocal strength is better than ever."

More Craig David More Craig David

He may have been at the height of his fame over ten years ago but for everyone packed into the Marquee nightclub at The Star, Craig David is still a very big deal. It’s a Sunday night and around 11pm before the man of the hour even makes an appearance, so that should give you an idea of how dedicated his fans are.

The 34-year-old singer, in the country for a string of DJ performances with latest project TS5, had many fans worried that they wouldn’t be hearing much of his instantly recognisable vocals, but don’t be fooled, David’s live DJ shows are just as much about him singing as they are about the records on the console.

From the second the British star jumps on stage, he has the crowd in the palm of his hand as he spins tunes with one hand, while he belts out harmonies and choruses into the microphone in the other.

He gets the dancefloor moving easily with new and old R&B and rap classics but David really gets the crowd fired up when his own tracks are given a go-around, among them include full renditions of Fill Me In, Rendezvous, 7 Days and even a taste of Walking Away. Time may have passed but David hasn’t missed a beat and his vocal strength is better than ever. The more beefed-up-than-we-remembered singer bounces around the stage with a giant smile on his face and it looks like he’s genuinely enjoying himself, so it comes as no surprise to hear his plans for releasing a new album later this year. Could this be the one and only time Australian fans get to see Craig David with the TS5 project? Either way, it seems it wouldn’t bother them. As long as he’s involved, they’re in.
