Album Review: Clue To Kalo - The Motives Records

"'The Motives Records' is an outwardly attractive Persian rug of a record."

The first album from Mark Mitchell in seven years (2009’s Lily Perdida was recorded in 2007) The Motives Records is an outwardly attractive Persian rug of a record; seductively layered and beautifully produced.

Once you unravel the threads though, there’s little in the way of memorable moments. Straddling the electro-acoustic divide (isn’t every bedroom artist these days?) the awkward melodies sabotage all the intricate design and clever wordplay. While it’s always good to welcome back an old hand, it’s not the excuse for fireworks we might have hoped for.
