"A superbly put together evening or classic showman stand-up."
Cam Knight could never be accused of "don't say I didn't warn you" comedy. After all, the sign on the door tells his crowd that tonight's show will contain audience participation.
Get Rich Or Die Crying is not so much a narrative on financial advice, as it is a collection of thoughts that Knight has had since entering his 40s. Musing on gift giving, masculinity, and his son's penchant for rear ends, the evening's smaller than usual crowd gets the full, up-close-and-personal experience, as Knight tailored his shtick to fit the audience.
This veteran stand-up's crowd work is near perfect; he can turn a phrase and react in a flash to the most bizarre of heckles and interjections. However, this sort of approach to a show can be dangerous, as it gives way for the rowdier punter to get a little too into the moment. Unfortunately tonight, such a problem occurs.

Nevertheless, Knight is a smooth and natural performer, getting even the most reserved of crowd members to divulge a juicy nugget of information. No two shows in his run will be alike, and for that alone it's worth checking out. It's a superbly put together evening or classic showman stand-up, and while Get Rich Or Die Crying probably isn't going to change the course of comedy, there's no way anyone will leave this show without a big ol' smile on their face.
Cam Knight presents Get Rich Or Die Crying until 22 Apr at the Mantra on Russell, part of the 2018 Melbourne International Comedy Festival
