Album Review: Bryce Dessner & Jonny Greenwood - St Carolyn By The Sea And Suite From There Will Be Blood

Outside their obligations to Radiohead and The National respectively, Jonny Greenwood and Bryce Dessner have always written orchestral compositions.

Outside their obligations to Radiohead and The National respectively, Jonny Greenwood and Bryce Dessner have always written orchestral compositions. This split disc showcases St Carolyn By The Sea, an extended piece with Dessner evoking tempest-tossed coastal scenery, and Greenwood's compelling presentation of the There Will Be Blood score from his work with director Paul Thomas Anderson. Dessner's sinuous guitar brilliantly recontextualises his post-rock inclinations, while Greenwood's eloquently mellifluous string arrangements simultaneously rock like a lullaby and creep with sinister intent.
