Album Review: Broncho - Just Hip Enough To Be Woman

StarStarStar

"Aggression should have filtered throughout for greater effect"

It’s difficult to ascertain whether Oklahoma’s Broncho is paying homage to their heroes or ripping them off. Songs like Stop Tricking and Taj Mahal bear more-than-striking resemblances to Joan Jett and Split Enz respectively – maybe not intentional, but the links exist. Then there are moments where the magic truly happens. The one/two blast of What and Class Historian is punchy, cheeky and fun, and the sneering delivery, hip wiggles and Cars references feel genuine. The final tracks, especially China, bring an aggression that should have filtered throughout for greater effect.
