Carpenter has crafted a wonderfully varied record
Brisbane songstress Brianna Carpenter has written, recorded and produced her second album all by herself, to admirable end.
Presented as a series of vignettes, it shifts across the jazz/pop spectrum with each track. There's the bittersweet (The Way I Used To, Aches), the smoky (Bitter, Wolves), and the heartfelt, yet relatively restrained quirky (In Our Hearts, Anxious). Arrangements are inventive and lush, with the harmonies especially a highlight.
The vocals are strong and versatile, the only frustration being the occasional sense of affectation endemic to female singer-songwriters. A minor quibble – Carpenter has crafted a wonderfully varied record.
