There is still not much in the way of soaring three-part vocal harmonies but given the setting and location, these guys hold the trophy for making simple trebly guitar riffs and four/four drum beats cool – it’s what we came here for and it’s what we got.
Nestled amongst the quiet streets of Petersham lies the Petersham Bowling Club (PBC), a quaint 117-year-old operation popular amongst inner-west revellers for its barefoot bowls. It's also developed a growing reputation as a cool little live music venue – especially for local and interstate indie bands, helped by the grassroots movement that saved the venue from the attention of property developers a few years back. This community campaign meant the likes of Destiny 3000 could get shit started early on (while the Rabbitohs gave up another chance to play this year's grand final). Gaining a dedicated following in the short time they have been playing as a band, the all-female group have improved measurably since their other opening slot in Marrickville a few months ago – although the music was still pretty lo-fi and shoegazey, a more static and mono version of Splendora.
Housewives are a local thrashy, mixed-gender punk act whose set was as short as their songs. A bit of extra vocal in the mix made for some ear-shattering moments, and being behind in the playing times probably contributed to the only about six or seven songs getting performed, but it was still lots of fun.
Bitch Prefect are already up to their second release and the former Adelaide, current Melbourne-based threesome were eager to play songs off their forthcoming album Bird Nerds while revellers called out for the 'classics'. Having spent some time playing in Sydney before, the all-guy group were welcomed by the same bunch that turn out regularly to welcome other bands in the same genre/circle of friends (think Dick Diver, Camperdown & Out, Royal Headache etc.). There is still not much in the way of soaring three-part vocal harmonies but given the setting and location, these guys hold the trophy for making simple trebly guitar riffs and four/four drum beats cool – it's what we came here for and it's what we got.
