There's a wonderful retrospective buzz beneath the appealing dirge-like layers of Bell Weather Department's self-titled debut. Singer Jacob Moore's earnest vocals ensure that emotions are overtly represented from first track End Of The Yellow Brick Road. Musically, the Sydney five-piece have crafted an engaging bunch of indie-rock tracks with more rough-around-the-edges polish than most. The DIY approach dominates though; Asterisk, for example, has some awkward experimentation with compression and stereo panning, slightly marring an otherwise highlight. A quiet confidence promises more exciting things to come.
