Live Review: Asta, Luke Million

"Laid-back vibes" and "university" don't often find themselves in close proximity to each other, but that's exactly the way to describe the scene in the Adelaide Uni Cloisters as Asta kicked off her national tour.

Set against a forest fairy-like backdrop, Luke Million took the stage first, much to the delight of eager groovers and shakers already claiming their places on the dancefloor.

The makings of a truly unique artist can always be seen in their stage presence and crowd interactivity, and Asta's whole being seemed to be shrouded in some kind of otherworldly light as she conducted herself with the poise of an artist long entrenched in the performing arts business. Her impeccable choice of headwear could only be rivalled by her sweet-as-honey dance moves.

As she power-housed her way through tracks such as Escape and I Need Answers, you could almost see the music pulsing through her as she commanded both the stage and the front rows, arms lifted high to the sky, bopping up and down with the grooves. The intimate setting suited her well, allowing the small crowd to relax and unwind in the Friday night chill. In saying that, her vocal showcase honestly would've handled any sort of crowd with ease. Especially when she doled out those free T-shirts.

The energy spiked as she danced and flitted her way through My Heart Is On Fire, showcasing her impressive musical abilities. It's always refreshing watching an artist genuinely having fun onstage and humbly proving that they deserve all the praise they get. Crowd favourite Dynamite revitalised the crowd with a new energy, as Asta filled in for rapper Allday's verses with her own spin and showed off her potential for much, much bigger musical ventures.

Adelaide Uni's Cloister sessions always prove a hit and, while the crowd didn't fill the space, Asta sure managed to fill it anyway with her uber-cool pop beats. She's one to watch closely, for sure.
