"A record that could be much more tastefully done than it actually is"

More Aretha Franklin More Aretha Franklin

Not long ago, another Motown legend released a compilation of re-worked classics.

It was absolutely awful. Although decidedly better, Franklin’s attempt is still a record that could be much more tastefully done than it actually is. Album opener, At Last begins with Gershwin-style strings, before a rhythm section lays down a solid foundation for Franklin’s still-got-it voice, but production-wise, they could have afforded to scale it way back. Such is the same, if not even more applicable to, the rest of the album. Damn shame about the auto-tune, too.
