Album Review: Aphex Twin - Cheetah

StarStarStar

"Cheetah may not be Aphex Twin's most inspired work, but he's arguably at his most nostalgic."

More Aphex Twin Aphex Twin

Given all the boundary-smashing, expectation-boggling tangents in his singular career, the Cheetah is a surprising back step for Aphex Twin.

In particular, the promo track CIRKLON3 harks back to the warm analog sounds of his early '90s output. The overall vibe is somewhat lackadaisical, but the tranquilizer groove of the opening track is a low-riding highlight; similar in feel to his lauded Selected Ambient Works 85-92, only with more low end heaviness. Cheetah may not be Aphex Twin's most inspired work, but he's arguably at his most nostalgic.
