The opening track of Creatures is pervaded by a melancholic vibe, Ali E’s voice riding out over dark, poppy alternative rock.
While engaging and maintaining her own style, she is certainly not as original or brilliant as, say, Courtney Barnett — if you’re looking for a comparison — and finds herself drawing more to the fictional Clash At Demonhead from Scott Pilgrim Vs The World. This is to say her voice bleeds emotion quite sensuously. In the end, the underlying music doesn’t exactly push any sonic boundaries of experimentation, which would be great to see next time.
