Album Review: Air - The Virgin Suicides (15th Anniversary Edition)

23 June 2015 | 4:25 pm | Guido Farnell

"The result is a sumptuous blur of drifting, dreamy sound, very little of which was actually used in Ford Coppola’s film."

The enduring popularity of lavishly-packaged limited edition super-deluxe box sets ought to have fans grabbing this one.

Setting themselves free of the spectre of Perrey and Kingsley that haunted Moon Safari, the duo, in atmospheric soundtrack mode, dealt lusciously hazy melancholy vibes melding French space pop with psychedelics that referenced Pink Floyd and The Beatles. The result is a sumptuous blur of drifting, dreamy sound, very little of which was actually used in Ford Coppola’s film. The extra disc of polished live recordings demonstrates the magic they conjure is not confined to the studio.
