3 Little Gigs

"A few unfortunate downs, but plenty of ups throughout."

The split-billed gig is a cornerstone of any comedy festival worth its salt, and The Imperial has played host to 3 Little Gigs for a number of MICF seasons now. It's one of the hidden staples of the festival - gifting three up-n-comers from the Aus comedy scene a chance to strut their stuff for 15 minutes apiece.

This year's got off to a shaky start in the form of SA native Nick O'Connell. O'Connell has plenty to offer in the way of personal anecdotes, but his style seems less geared towards comedy than straightforward storytelling. He says at the top of the set that he has trialled his jokes for the show, and while this is clear in his slick delivery, his slightly odd timbre and choice of words could well benefit from even more feedback.

Bec Charlwood took the reins next and quickly garnered pace and approval from her audience. At just 23 she already has a firmly established style and tone in her performance; undoubtedly she is as charismatic offstage as she is on. Her callbacks are brilliant and her pacing throughout is finessed beyond her years.

With Rhi Down capping off the bill, the show pulls itself back into a hilarious affair. Part self-deprecating, part self-loving, all self-assured, her accomplished funnies make Down a veritable queen of paradoxical wit. Once again, 3 Little Gigs has secured a fiery character who is unapologetic and downright fantastic. A few unfortunate downs, but plenty of ups throughout.

Catch Nick O'Connell, Rhi Down and Bec Charlwood present 3 Little Gigs, til 9 Apr at the Imperial Hotel, part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
