Work to begin in 2019.
Melbourne is set to add to its already-extensive list of live venues, with a 5000-seat arena to be built in the next few years.
As 9 News reports, works on the currently-unnamed venue, to be built in Melbourne Park, will begin in 2019 in an effort to ensure the Australian Open tennis tournament stays in Australia.
The arena will be used for sports and concerts and is reportedly part of a $271 million redevelopment of the precinct.
"[Melbourne Park] is a pretty good facility, but we want the best facility, not only in the nation, but in the world," Victorian Treasurer, Tim Pallas, said of the news.

The arena's 5000 capacity is slightly less than some of Melbourne's other popular live venues, including Festival Hall (5,400), Margaret Court Arena (7,500), Hisense Arena (10,500) and Rod Laver Arena (15,000).
