Woodford Folk Festival Wants Your Help In Going Car-Free For Future Events

4 April 2017 | 4:14 pm | Staff Writer

The annual regenerative, reflective event, The Planting, returns to Woodfordia at the end of the month

The annual Woodford Folk Festival has always prided itself on being an environmentally conscious affair.

Still, the yearly end-of-year shindig may take things a step (or several) further in future instalments should the think-tank at this month's The Planting event in Woodfordia formulate some sustainable solutions, including a push for punters to forgo driving onto the festival grounds.

'Car-Free Woodfordia' is just one of the many panels on offer at The Planting, an extension of Woodfordia's yearly Tree-Planting Weekend series that has run since 1997 to replenish and regenerate the event grounds' natural resources.

Along with the traditional revegetation activities, The Planting now includes workshops, panels, performances and all manner of other happenings, all exploring subjects "ranging from raw foods to invertebrates, the local pond to climate change".

Held on Sunday 30 April from 2pm, 'Car-Free Woodfordia' will "investigate incentives and assistance for those who choose a car-free festival experience", mulling on ways in which "festival patrons and volunteers [can] be encouraged to leave their cars at home".

Other drawcards include a presentation on soil, from scientist Kelly Bryant, lessons in raising bees from Paul Wood, forums including Camp Consumers (featuring David Weaver, David Gratton and Maria Raciti) and Bringing Home The Babaganoush (with Elaine Bradley, Christine Ballinger and Michele Smith), as well as Woodfordia's Architectural Future and heaps more besides.

There will also be appearances from the likes of Helen Razer, Michael Ramage, Michael Leunig, Richard Fidler, Jessica Bloom, Allyson Williams and plenty of other thinkers of varying backgrounds, plus musical performances from The East Pointers, Gawurra, Hollow Coves, The Barleyshakes and Formidable Vegetable Sound System, among others.

The Planting will be held at Woodfordia from 28-30 April. Tickets are on sale now.

See the event's website for more information, including the full program on offer.
