Why You Am I’s ‘The Majesty Of Tap’ Adelaide Gigs Will Be Next Level

Many artists experience ‘Spinal Tap moments’ throughout their career, but few that can rival that of Aussie rock legends You Am I who are going to great lengths to pay tribute to the classic American mockumentary This is Spinal Tap.

Frontman Tim Roger and co will be throwing down the gauntlet and turning it up to eleven at Adelaide Festival Centre’s iconic Dunstan Playhouse this weekend as part of the state’s Adelaide Cabaret Festival, and not only will it be a highlight of the festival, but, given past reviews, it’ll make a fair few end-of-year lists, too.

The band will be in fine form this weekend after honing the acclaimed show to perfection around the country.

The Music noted at the Sydney leg of You Am I’s The Majesty Of Tap tour that “everyone's gone home laughing”, while also commenting on how on-point their delivery was:

“You Am I's tribute came with affection and they fit the roles maybe a little too well - right down to the eye make-up,” said reviewer Ross Clelland

“Rogers' big-gesture theatricality has more than a dollop of David St Hubbins' sprawling ego. Davey Lane really is a music geek who finds something to love in just about any era of the rock music.

“There's probably a Nigel Tufnel amplifier than goes to 11 in his lounge-room next to that mandolin and very fetching leopard skin vest/shirt that he sported.

“As the "lukewarm water" between the "fire and ice", Andy Kent's taciturn nature channels Derek Smalls neatly.

“And perched behind a perfectly grandiose drum kit - disappointingly lacking double kick-drums, but with Chinese gong I don't recall actually being used - Rusty Hopkinson was all those skinsmen The Tap used up, right down to suffering a 'bizarre lighting accident' toward the end.”

You Am I’s take on Spinal Tap hits will be taken to the next level during the Cabaret Festival, with punters able to soak up the vibe of the Wintergarden, which starts on the Dunstan Playhouse Riverdeck, continues along our Walk of Fame, and spills down our newly opened Terrace, with: food vendors, bars, fire pits, entertainment and covered seating.

And after the show, fans can hit up the Backstage Club, enjoying its creativity, chaos and variety.

You Am I’s The Majesty Of Tap takes over Dunstan Playhouse from 8-10 June, with tickets via Adelaide Festival Centre.
