"We left in so much pain and sorrow, and we were crying..."
As Iran gradually loosens its cultural laws, a massive cultural shift is happening in the country right now as a number of musicians and artists are now getting more opportunities to perform publicly, though just how much freedom they will be given is yet to determined.
Tonight's edition of ABC's Foreign Correspondents, titled Persian Jam, takes a deeper look into Iran's music scene and the challenges that artists have faced and continue to deal with.
A perfect, yet daunting example of the realities Iranian musicians face is 25Band who were forced to flee the country in 2009 after a film clip the group released showed lead singer, Tamin, dressed in a wedding gown with her chest and shoulders exposed.
The film clip's director, who stayed in Iran while the band headed to Turkey, was sentenced to two years in prison.

"We were forced to leave our country and exile ourselves so we could work," Tamin said.
"We left in so much pain and sorrow, and we were crying. Now, we try to follow all the news back home in Iran. We watch movies all the time even though they make us cry. We're still devastated."
Folk artist Reza Koolaghani is one of many musicians who is benefiting from Iran's loosened laws, as he has now been able to make music a full time career and has also signed with a producer.
"Before things opened up, music in Iran was played underground," Koolaghani explained.
"I was considered an underground artist but now bands are getting permission to perform. I am really happy with my choice, as far as I'm concerned it was the best thing to do."
Gypsy-punk outfit Bomrani experienced similar instances to Koolaghani, as even though they had released two official albums, were resigned to playing unauthorised gigs.
However, since being given permission by the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, Bomrani can now play publicly, have signed a record deal and a plan to tour throughout Europe.
Tonight's episode airs on ABC TV and ABC iView at 9.30pm. Check out the trailer below.
