More Windwaker Windwaker Profile

As Australian genre-defying heavy act Windwaker gear up to release their new album, smile, you’re on camera, they took over triple j studios for Like A Version – where they put their own spin on another homegrown artist’s song.

Covering The Kid LAROI’s hit single, GIRLS, the band teased fans with a keyboard-led intro played by vocalist Liam Guinane. The track transformed into a hip-hop-meets-metal rendition, with crunchy guitars, drums, and addictive synthesisers.

After performing most of the song with slick clean vocals, Guinane teamed up with bassist Indey Salvestro for some short-lived screams.

The frontman and bassist then discussed their song choice, with Guinane revealing that it’s never easy for the band to agree on a song, as they all have diverse musical tastes. However, they quickly agreed on GIRLS.

Salvestro revealed that The Kid LAROI is an artist they play plenty on Windwaker tours. “An Australian band covering an Australian artist is pretty important to us,” Guinane added. They both also shared appreciation for the song’s structure and production.

While at the triple j studios, the band performed their new single, dna, released today. Check out the renditions of GIRLS and dna, as well as their interview about covering The Kid LAROI, below.

Windwaker’s forthcoming album, smile, you’re on camera, drops on Friday, 23 October. Throughout October and November, the band are touring across Australia with The Pretty Wild (US) alongside RinRin and DREGG.

On the tour, Guinane said, “We are so excited to bring our new album to life on stages all around Australia.

“We’ve poured so much into this record, and we can’t wait to play these songs live for the very first time. We’re also so stoked to be bringing out The Pretty Wild for their Australian debut, along with a couple of our favourite Aussie artists. We hope to see you all there.”

Opening up about the album, the band added, “smile, you’re on camera is undeniably our best and most focused collection of songs to date. We learned so much making this record together, and we’re incredibly proud of what it’s become.

“It opens the door to who we are and offers a glimpse into our world through the highs and the lows. It’s the most personal and honest Windwaker has ever been.”

The album features the singles dna, victory lap, click (with RinRin), and do or die.
