Watch Michael Gudinski & Dan Sultan Talk About Music… But Mainly Football

23 May 2014 | 10:40 am | Staff Writer

Duo go back to Junction Oval

More Dan Sultan More Dan Sultan

Singer songwriter Dan Sultan and Mushroom Group supremo Michael Gudinski (also one of Sultan's biggest fans) have sat down at the old Junction Oval to talk about the Blackbird album.

But given that you have two St Kilda Football Club tragics chatting at the spiritual home of the club, the conversation turns to footy pretty quickly.

“Because I'm an old bloke, I was fortunate enough – or unfortunate enough – to see the mighty Saints play their last game here in 1964,” Gudinski says. “Both being St Kilda supporters is something we've had in common for a while, it's a very frustrating team to follow as you know.

“The last part of the equation is that I was old enough to be there in 1966, we won the flag by one point and for you younger St Kilda supporters – including my son – it's a very frustrating thing because we've been so close so many times.”

Long time St Kilda sufferers…

The conversation then veers to Sultan's song Under My Skin, which – despite Gudinski's probing – was not influenced by the infamous 1993 Nicky Winmar incident where the St Kilda star indigenous footballer raised his jersey to point to the colour of his skin.

“I can tell you one thing,” Gudinski says, “you'll do better than the Saints this year with this album.”
