'That Message' is the first in a series of four videos to be released in honour of the band's forthcoming second LP, 'PAINT'

More Holy Holy More Holy Holy

Nobody could accuse Holy Holy of doing things by halves. With their second full-length, PAINT, set for release next week, the acclaimed duo have revealed their new single, That Message, and, for good measure, an accompanying visual art project titled Painting to PAINT.

A collaboration with a group of local artists curated by renowned expressionist painter James Drinkwater, the Painting To PAINT project will consist of four videos charting the creation of visual-art accompaniments to as many tracks from the upcoming album, the first of which has been released around the LP's third single, That Message.

Filmed and directed by award-winning auteur Charlie Ford, the clip for That Message documents Drinkwater's process of interpreting the band's song and translating it into the visual medium. Consequent instalments, rolling out from next week, will follow artists Lottie Consalvo, who will paint Willow Tree, Christopher Horder (Shadow) and Ben Kenning (Send My Regards) and their respective reinterpretations of Holy Holy's tunes.

"This project has allowed a rare crossing of the line that exists between the Australian contemporary music scene and the Australian contemporary art world," band member Tim Carroll said in a statement. "There is an opportunity here to see how an artist who operates in the visual world, interprets and responds to a work created in the sonic one. Working with James is a real honour for us."

The respect between parties is immense and explicitly mutual, with Drinkwater expressing of his involvement: "When asked to curate the paint project for Holy Holy, it was something I agreed to immediately on the grounds of mutual admiration; I hold a lot of respect for the boys."

"It presented an opportunity to draw on a reservoir of visual artists that I find compelling," he explained. "Lottie, Chris and Ben, all gifted painters with incredibly different practices, meant it could only be monumental."

"I chose That Message because I liked its dream state spacial quality," he continued. "It has this incredible pulse that is layered and textured with drama, like a painting… like paint, Holy Holy have a sophistication in their approach that I find engaging and enamouring."
