Canadian post-punk act Viet Cong have announced two headline sideshows to coincide with their appearance at Melbourne's Sugar Mountain festival next January.

The quartet will play their first show in Australia for 2016 at The Brightside in Brisbane on Friday 22 January, before heading to Sydney following Sugar Mountain to perform at GoodGod Small Club on Australia Day (Monday 25 January).

While a support act is yet to be announced for the Brisbane show, it has been confirmed that local act Batpiss will open for Viet Cong in Sydney.

The Australian shows will also mark the last ever performances that the band use the Viet Cong moniker for, following conversations with the Vietnamese community.

"Through this dialogue and hearing about what the name means to so many people, we have decided we will be changing the name of our band," the group said in a statement.

"Art and music are about creative expression. However, our band name is not our cause, and we are not going to fight for it. This is not what our band is about."

A new name is expected to be announced shortly.
