Veteran US punk-rocker Scott Russo, best known for his work as the frontman of Californian scene mainstays Unwritten Law, is undergoing surgery for an unspecified malady, it has been confirmed.

The news was broken via a statement from Aaron "El Hefe" Abeyta and his wife, Jennifer, who co-run the band's label, Cyber Tracks. In the statement, posted to social media this morning (AEST), Hefe and Jen asked fans "for your prayers, love and support as Scott Russo (Unwritten Law) is undergoing surgery this afternoon".

Cyber Tracks' post doesn't elaborate on the reasons for the surgery — "we are not authorized to go into detail at this time", the owners wrote — but "we are asking the Unwritten Law community to band together in support of Scott".

"We will keep you updated as the day goes on," the post reads. "Scott and the band thank you in advance for the well wishes, and they send their love in return."

Despite the limited information available regarding Russo's condition, it's not expected that the surgery will interfere with the band's live performance plans; with their next gig scheduled on 10 March, the band advised one concerned fan: "No shows are cancelled!"
