Underground Playlists are back and better than ever, thanks to the legends at Mountain Goat Beer. In fact, we’ve decided to pick out our favourite tracks each week and share them with you, so you can get to know the best of the bunch and keep your finger on the pulse. Here are this week's top picks for our Underground Playlists...

Ruby Jackson (NSW)

Out Of Fashion

Aussie soul queen Ruby Jackson has delivered another hit that brings together all the best bits of old soul, jazz, and R&B. Out Of Fashion is a straight slow-jam bop that celebrates love, no matter how hard it might be. Deep feel-it-in-your-bones drums lay a funky beat while horns, strings and Jackson's vocals set the groove. One of the highlights of this song is the slight Aussie inflections you can hear in Jackson’s voice, which sets the song apart from the rest. It’s like D’Angelo and Missy Higgins decided to make a song together, and it gets better and better the more you listen.

S.A.B (QLD)

GONNA GET GOT

Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter

The South African-born, Meanjin(Brisbane)-based rapper, S.A.B is carving his space within the scene through honesty and authenticity, ready to take on any person or system which stands in his way with his new song GONNA GET GOT. This new single is hard-hitting, integrating soul influences and dark trap beats while unpacking the layered prejudices that are often invisible to the person doing the judging. It’s a strong single and definitely places S.A.B on the map as one to watch.

Grand Pine (VIC)

June

The sweet music makers behind Grand Pine have come out with their first single since 2022, June, which is as beautiful as it is haunting. Slow-picked acoustic guitars drive this special song along as vocalist Guy Perkins serenades with soft and husky vocals. Embodying artists like Bon Iver, Pinegrove, and The Middle East, Grand Pine consistently digs deep on the emotion front, producing cinematic and heartfelt songs that transport you to a place that is a lot softer than the usual ‘hardness’ of the everyday grind.

Grievous Bodily Calm (WA)

Spirals

Instrumental band Grievous Bodily Calm have delivered another slice of madness into our ears with their new single Spirals, and we couldn't be happier. Glittery and often chaotic sounds really ‘spiral’ around in this new single, staying true to the band's usual antics. Strange drum patterns, frenetic synths and funky vocals seemingly exist without any form of structure, quickly coming together for a brief piece of succinct music before the whirlwind starts all over again. It’s such a strange listening experience that it becomes almost addictive as you notice new instruments, sounds, beats, and little nuggets that passed you by on the previous listens. It’s unlike anything you’ll listen to and is perfect if you’re sick of your boring old playlist; this is sure to spice things up.

Oscar The Wild (SA)

Pinch Me Please

Oscar The Wild have released their first jaunt for 2023, the wild and exciting Pinch Me Please, which delves into the complex idea of trying to navigate life without having to live in a fantasy world. This song gets you from the first line: hook, line and sinker. Crunchy guitars, stellar vocals and fast-paced drums are quick to make you dance and bounce around to its turbulent vibes. Pinch Me Please also see’s the band cross over into punk territory, with an erratic soundscape similar to the likes of The Beths or WAAX
