Twenty One PilotsLady Gaga’s addition to the highly anticipated Top Gun sequel has been widely publicised in the lead up to the film, but it seems its soundtrack was heading in a different direction, before leading man Tom Cruise stepped in.
Twenty One Pilots’ Tyler Joseph has revealed in a recent interview with KROQ that they were tapped to write a song for Top Gun: Maverick, but things very quickly unravelled after they signed on.
"You know, funny thing, I was working with the music placement person for the new Top Gun on writing a new song for them. And then I believe Tom Cruise came in and just fired everyone,” Joseph said.
He was quick to note that COVID delays led to “a few overhauls” and that they were unfortunately involved in one.
Joseph was invited to watch some scenes from the film but the band’s involvement was axed prior to them beginning work on anything.
“Then I got word that there was a wholesale swap,” he said.
Despite that, Twenty One Pilots will still feature in cinemas across the globe later this month, with their 21 Pilot Cinema Experience screening in Australia on May 19.
The film is an extended cut of the duo’s 2021 live-stream performance and arrives on the big screen one year after the release of their latest album Scaled And Icy.
Top Gun: Maverick hits Australian cinemas on May 26.
