Triple M ProfileGet ready for a massive party this summer, hosted by Triple M. From today into early December, the popular radio station is asking: what’s the greatest song of all time?
To answer the question that’s haunted pub and water cooler conversations for decades, the rock ‘n’ roll broadcaster is launching its biggest nationwide countdown yet: the Triple M 1000.
The fun for the inaugural Triple M 1000 countdown begins today, with the six-week voting window officially opening. Listeners across the country will have the chance to choose their favourite songs of all time, and a press release notes that selections aren’t limited by decade or genre; you really can choose anything you like.
Music lovers in Australia can cast votes using the LiSTNR app – available for free – and enter up to ten tracks to shape the most definitive countdown in Australian radio history.
Voting opens today and closes on Sunday, 15 November. Punters’ votes will be counted from Monday, 16 November. The official Triple M 100 countdown commences on Monday, 23 November, and blasts across the airwaves for two weeks. It concludes with The Grand Finale on Saturday, 5 December.
In addition to spotlighting the music you love, voters enter a draw to win a $50,000 cash prize, which will be drawn at the end of the countdown.
Before the countdown begins next month, Triple M’s announcers will be rallying behind their favourite songs while launching on-air campaigns for their top picks. Musicians from across the country will also be heard on the radio during the voting period, sharing their picks and encouraging people to vote.
To promote the Triple M 1000, the broadcaster has launched a marketing campaign fronted by Mick Molloy and Beau Ryan, both of whom now realise that finding the greatest song of all time is no easy task.
Jamie Angel, Head of the Triple M Network, said of the countdown, “At Triple M, we live and breathe music, and we’ve spent decades proudly championing live music and the legendary tracks that have shaped our lives. But we’re also not afraid to stir the pot a little.
“Everyone has a passionate, completely unshakeable opinion about what the best song ever written is. We want to hear them all, even the wildly wrong ones.
“The Triple M 1000 gives the keys of the station to our listeners to settle the score once and for all. Does this mean you might hear a few surprises along the way? Well, we certainly hope so. It depends entirely on you.”
Last year, triple j hosted its inaugural Hottest 100 of Australian Songs, with INXS’s Never Tear Us Apart taking the crown. The top ten tracks included bangers from Hilltop Hoods, The Veronicas, Missy Higgins, Crowded House, Powderfinger, Cold Chisel, Gotye and Kimbra, and Paul Kelly.
How similar will Triple M’s list look? We’ll have to wait and see.
