Introducing ROYBOY, kinda.
Triple J Unearthed have unveiled the winner of their DIY Supergroup competition but there remains some mystery around their identity...
Dubbed ROYBOY, the Sydney hip hop act called in to triple j this morning and opted to chat with Breakfast show hosts Sally & Erica using a voice modulator to keep their identity a secret, telling the hosts they wanted "all the focus to be on the music”.
ROYBOY beat over 900 other entries to claim the title with their track switchUP which featured samples from Flume, Tame Impala, Amy Shark and G Flip.
Finalists for the competition included EAST AV3, JEFFE, JIM ALXNDR and Wolfjay (who we caught up with at BIGSOUND last year, check out the podcast here).
"As well as slick production and the outrageous personality coming through on the track, ROYBOY’s entry for this comp won us over by really nailing the mission statement of the DIY Supergroup," explained triple j Unearthed Music Director Dave Ruby Howe.
"They’ve used elements from some of Australia’s biggest names but done it in a way that feels wholly their own and the end result is a destructive alley-oop of a track."
