Saturday Night Live alumnus and Trainwreck star Bill Hader has been added to the cast for the third season of Fox's unlikely cop-comedy hit, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, it has been announced.

The news was broken by TVLine and confirmed by the show's official Facebook page in the wee hours of this morning (AEST), with a photo post depicting Hader dressed in police formal-wear and looking very official indeed.

Hader — who joined SNL as a featured player at the same time as Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg, staying on for a season longer than his new castmate - will join the series as the precinct's new, "efficient" captain, stepping into the hole left at the conclusion of the second season by the promotion to the PR division suffered under duress by previous captain and best character ever Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher, who remains a part of the main cast despite the apparent exit from the Nine-Nine).

However, according to TVLine, that's not all the show has in store for its third run around the block, with co-showrunner Mike Schur saying, "It takes a lot of fun story twists and turns, in very rapid succession, once the new captain is announced. It's going to be a really funny and good episode."

Brooklyn Nine-Nine also stars Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Joe Lo Truglio, Stephanie Beatriz and Chelsea Peretti. Its first season is available to stream on Netflix. Season two recently screened on SBS, and is available via iTunes.
