This Week's Releases

Gorillaz, Airling, Thurston Moore, Feist, Mary J Blige and more

Gorillaz — Humanz (Warner)

With interludes from Australia's own Ben Mendelsohn, Humanz is a futuristic journey into space with dozens of collaborations such as Grace Jones, Kelela and Vince Staples. It's "dark, sinister and addictive" at the same time that it dishes up a "hands-in-the-air, euphoric" vibe. Gorillaz remain "the embodiment of their own interlude The Non-Conformist Oath". We gave it five stars and our Album Of The Week.

Airling  Hard To Sleep, Easy To Dream (Pieeater/Inertia)

Airling with the help of Big Scary's Tom Iansek, has "crafted an album of sweetly understated vibes that combines Shepherd's cool and almost crystalline clear vocals with gently rocking beats and breezy electronica". Airling's vocals are front and centre and though it "doesn't quite achieve otherworldly etherealness", it is a solid pop record. We gave it three-and-a-half stars.

Bliss N Eso — Off The Grid (Illusive)

Bliss N Eso deliver what we know and love from them — "rhythmic, pulsing flow occasionally shifting into hyperdrive; consistent delivery with space to get a little cah-razy and big hooks". Off The Grid tackles more complex subject matter, however, such as "Eso's confrontation with alcoholism, and his triumph". We gave it three stars.
