King Gizzard, Panda Bear, Conrad Sewell and more

Le1f — Riot Boi (Terrible Records/Remote Control)

Scoring our Album Of The Week and four stars, Riot Boi is "ready-made for vogueing at parties" due to its "hard house and dance rhythms with tongue-in-cheek lyricism". The record "drips with self-aware sexual energy" and "thrumming electronic rhythms that make it impossible to stand still, but there's always grit, a real edge". Riot Boi is "sexy, one-of-a-kind and definitely too cool for us mere mortals".

Kerser — Next Step (ABK/ADA)

Kerser's first release on a major label, Next Step has the resounding silence of "the absence of Kerser's former beat-maker-in-chief, Nebs, perhaps the best beat-maker in the country". Kerser's story is one of an "unapologetic, partially reformed bad guy trying to make sense of the maelstrom", though "the C-bomb is no longer as shocking". We gave Next Step three stars.

Dream On, Dreamer — Songs Of Soulitude (Independent)

In a departure from older material, "clean vocals dominate the majority of the album", allowing the more "tender moments" to hit deeper. The album's most refreshing moments remain the "more unexpected aspects" — "the ambient and noise-laden opener Souls On Fire and completely acoustic finale Violent Pictures." We gave Songs Of Soulitude three stars.
