Blank Realm — Illegals In Heaven (Bedroom Suck/Fire Records)

Picking up our Album Of The Week with four stars, Blank Realm "still don't believe they belong in the critical spotlight they've innocuously found themselves standing under". Illegals In Heaven is "simultaneously frantic, manic and irreverent", with guitar solos that sound "sharper and meaner than before". "Experimental tendencies and pop experiments combine in one glorious amalgam of sound."

The Arcs — Yours, Dreamily (Nonesuch/Warner)

For those who aren't aware, singer and guitarist of The Black Keys, Dan Auerbach, is The Arcs. Yours, Dreamily is "mid-tempo psych-coloured blues rock", though "there's enough variation in the production and soundscape to keep the straightforward compositions from feeling too dreary." An unexpected surprise is the female mariachi band in Chains Of Love; picking up three stars, "it's reassuring to see Auerbach loosen up and have a little fun here."

Gold Class — It's You (Spunk)

"Adam Curley sings like a man from nowhere," our reviewer can't help but utter. His "morose baritone" is "utterly intoxicating" and in Shingles (Stay A While) is "a sublime portrait of vulnerability". The band are "far greater than the sum of its four parts", "underpinning each song with a nervous energy that imbues Curley's words with a poignant fragility, like the whole thing could collapse at any minute." We gave the album four stars.
