Influential US rocker and frontman of ‘80s outfit The Smithereens, Pat DiNizio, has passed away aged 62.
A statement was posted to the band’s Facebook earlier today confirming his passing.
“Today we mourn the loss of our friend, brother and bandmate Pat DiNizio,” the post reads.
“Pat had the magic touch. He channeled the essence of joy and heartbreak into hook-laden three minute pop songs, infused with a lifelong passion for rock & roll.
“Our journey with Pat was long, storied and a hell of a lot of fun. We grew up together. Little did we know that we wouldn't grow old together.”
While no cause of death has been revealed, DiNizio shared a post on Facebook on the weekend stating he was at home undergoing physical therapy following recent falls that damaged his neck and back.
The New Jersey act were forced to cancel three shows earlier in the year due to one of DiNizio’s falls, and back in 2015 a similar incident caused serious nerve damage in his right arm.
The Smithereens – affectionately dubbed ‘America’s Band’, penning hits such as Blood And Roses, In A Lonely Place and Behind The Wall Of Sleep – were scheduled to head back out on tour next month.
