Finally Returning To Australia, Faithless Are Paying Homage To The Beloved Maxi Jazz While Looking To The Future

The Iron Eye Get Shit Off Their Chest With 'Conscience Cleaner'

The Iron Eye, still one of Australia's best rock bands.

The Iron Eye, still one of Australia's best rock bands.

The Iron Eye play a well-oiled yet awesomely gritty brand of rock music that'll call to mind the likes of The Black Keys, Royal BloodQueens Of The Stone Age, Arctic Monkeys (well, the better, older Arctic Monkeys, at least), and so forth. Yet their so much more than low-hanging comparisons to some of rock's greats, as this Brisbane trio has the songwriting skills to matter. As evident by their latest effort, 'Conscience Cleaner'.

I was a real fan of their last EP, 2016's 'Foreign Bodies', especially that release's final track, the death-creeping mammoth that was 'Silence'. It seems that the Aussie band has since pulled a leaf or two from that particular track's heavier nature with this infectious new Tom Larkin produced single. Noisy, grungy guitars and fuzzed-out bass lines collide with loud, crashing drums and Nick Lythall's distorted, dulcet vocal hooks for one killer rock'n'roll combo. It's the very best bits of The Iron Eye's rambunctious sound all rolled into one rip-roaring three-minute track. It's exactly what the doctor ordered for me, honestly.

Drummer Antonio Mancini spoke of the sheer struggle for the band actually get this latest song tracked and completed, with all of that recording and studio stress actually resulting in them pulling their finger right out and making something extra special. For as the skinsman put it, "This one was tough, but oh so worth the hard work and trouble."

"We actually had a studio booked in QLD and we flew Tom's engineer Jon Grace up to meet us in Brisbane. I remember walking into the studio and thinking the vibe wasn’t right for this song. Then the issues began. We started having serious problems with the desk, the monitoring and a bunch of Rack gear Jon had flown up from Melbourne. We spent a whole day trying to make it work but with no result. We left the studio that night pretty defeated and rang Tom. We told him that things weren’t working up here and that we were flying to Melbourne in the morning, which we did!- We spent the whole week doing it RIGHT at his studio Homesurgery Recordings, sleeping on the floor of the control room - the added financial and time pressure resulted in this absolute MONSTER of a track, and honestly... it was all worth it."

And the good news just keeps on rolling for these guys, as they've just been announced as one of three Queensland finalists for the VB Hard Yards competition, so go and vote for these outright legends here. Then, when you're done with that, go and clean your own conscience below:
