While the multi-hyphenated LL Cool J has by no means been short of things to do as a philanthropist, entrepreneur, actor, author, and Kennedy Center Honoree, it has been a noticeably long time (11 years to be exact) between songs. The Grammy-nominated artist changed all that today (June 14th) with the release of his latest single Saturday Night Special featuring fellow rap game heavyweights Fat Joe and Rick Ross

Now released on all streaming services, Saturday Night Special is a guide book to street life, highlighting the archetypes that exist within the scene such as the “greedy killer” or “daredevil type”. A lesson taught by the OGs of the game, no one knows the complex and often harsh actualities like these guys, and they pay their respects to the hustle.

If the features of Fat Joe and Rick Ross weren’t enough, Saturday Night Special is produced by legendary musician Q Tip of A Tribe Called Quest. With hip-hop, jazz and funk sensibilities, this track is one not to be missed.

With the song only announced by the Rock The Bells singer a week prior (June 7th), fans were left intoxicated, and with short notice,  to see what would be in store.

Saturday Night Special is just the beginning,” LL says about the newest release. “There’s a lot more where this came from, and I’m hype for y'all to hear this new record. We’re doing this for the fans and for Hip-Hop culture.”

By new record, LL is referring to his upcoming project The FORCE (Frequencies of Real Creative Energy) which is set to be released later in the year. With a decade-long hiatus and a comeback featuring three of hip-hop’s biggest names, one can only wonder what kind of colossal soundscapes are waiting on the other side. The newest album will also mark the celebration of 40 years since Def Jam Recordings’ conception; with LL as one of the label’s first and finest exports.
