After 17 years, one EP, three studio albums and countless tours, Brisbane outfit The Butterfly Effect have officially announced they are calling it quits.

Though the group initially split in 2012 following the departure of frontman Clint Boge, the alt-rockers announced their return the following year with a new vocalist and single, however there has been little activity from the group in recent times.

In a statement posted to the group's website on Monday, drummer Ben Hall explained the reasons behind the decision.

"While we are sad to acknowledge the end of an era for us, we recognise this is not a huge surprise to fans and we decided the time had come to provide a proper send-off to the project," says drummer Ben Hall.

Boge described the The Butterfly Effect as the band's "life work".

"Regardless of personalities, this project is a part of us all. Ending now with grace and celebration of an incredible fifteen years is the right thing to do."

To coincide with the news, it has also been announced that band's three LP's, Begins Here, Imago and Final Conversation Of Kings, are set to be released on vinyl.
