Canadian indie-pop sister duo Tegan And Sara have announced that they’re set to be the subject of a forthcoming documentary, but it isn’t actually focused on their music.

Fanatical: The Catfishing Of Tegan And Sara follows the long-running catfishing scheme that targeted fans of the band, with the sisters describing the documentary as “the biggest story we never shared.”

The documentary will premiere on US streaming service Hulu on Friday, 18 October. An Australian release date is yet to be announced.

According to a Variety report, the documentary tracks what happened after Tegan Quin (who performs alongside her sister, Sara Quin) was hacked in 2011, her personal files exposed, and her digital identity stolen in a scheme that targeted the duo’s fans, many of whom are part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Delving into the original 2011 investigation, Tegan Quin teamed up with documentary filmmaker and investigator Erin Lee Carr (Britney Vs. Spears) to unearth a trail of new victims and potential suspects.

The documentary synopsis reads (via Deadline), “This is a sprawling yet intimate story of how Tegan’s identity was stolen and weaponized in a complex catfish scheme to ensnare members of this community,” which caused a “severe ripple effect of mistrust, anxiety and self-doubt.”

On X (formerly known as Twitter), Tegan And Sara said of the forthcoming project, “A couple of years ago I wrote a story called Fake Tegan. I took it to [radio host] Jenny Eliscu and Erin Lee Carr and on October 18th, Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara, a documentary about a terrifying situation our band has been dealing with for 16 years will hit Hulu! More soon.”

Tegan And Sara’s most recent release, their tenth album, Crybaby, arrived in October 2022. Also in 2022, the television series based on the duo’s memoir, High School, made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival before dropping on Prime Video in Australia.
