More The Beatles More The Beatles

It’s official: the Fab Four actors who will portray one of the most influential bands of all time, The Beatles, have been announced.

While rumours have been floating around director Sam Mendes’ reported four films on the group since mid-2024, he and his chosen cast confirmed who will play who at the entertainment industry event, CinemaCon, in Las Vegas yesterday (31 March).

Paul Mescal (Gladiator II, Normal People) will depict Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson (The Iron Claw, Babygirl) will play John Lennon, Barry Keoghan (Saltburn, The Batman) will be Ringo Starr, and Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things, Les Misérables) will portray George Harrison.

Mendes—the director known for American Beauty, 1917, and the James Bond entries Skyfall and Spectre—confirmed that all four biopics focused on The Beatles will be released in cinemas in April 2028.

“We’re not just making one film about the Beatles – we’re making four,” Mendes said (per The Guardian). “Perhaps this is a chance to understand them a little more deeply.”

Revealing that he’d been attempting to make a film about The Beatles for years before he “finally gave up,” Mendes stated that the band’s story “was too big for one film.” He didn’t want to make a television series or add another documentary to the lengthy list of documentaries about the band.

He added, “There had to be a way to tell the epic story for a new generation. I can assure you there is still plenty left to explore, and I think we found a way to do that.”

Notably, the movies about the Fab Four have received blessings from McCartney and Starr, while the families of John Lennon and George Harrison have shared their approval. The forthcoming films mark the first time the remaining Beatles, their families, and their enterprise, Apple Corps, have granted full life story and music rights for a scripted film production.

In 2023, The Beatles released their final song, Now And Then, with an accompanying music video helmed by The Lord Of The Rings director Peter Jackson. Jackson had previously directed the three-part Disney+ documentary The Beatles: Get Back, and aided in the release of the restored 1970 documentary Let It Be.
