Taylor Swift's surprise new album folklore has broken some huge streaming records in less than 24 hours after being released.

The US songwriter's eighth studio LP broke the global record for first-day album streams on Spotify by a female artist with 80.6 million hits and is now the most streamed pop album on Apple Music in 24 hours with 35.47 million streams.

As well as selling over 1.3 million copies, folklore has also set the US and Worldwide Amazon Music Indie/Alternative Streaming record.

“Most of the things I had planned this summer didn’t end up happening, but there is something I hadn’t planned on that DID happen. And that thing is my 8th studio album, folklore. Surprise,” Swift said in a statement on Instagram last week.

“Before this year I probably would’ve overthought when to release this music at the ‘perfect’ time, but the times we’re living in keep reminding me that nothing is guaranteed.

“My gut is telling me that if you make something you love, you should just put it out into the world. That’s the side of uncertainty I can get on board with. Love you guys so much.”

The National’s Aaron Dessner collaborated on 11 out of the album’s 16 songs, while Bon Iver also helped co-write and provided vocals on one song.
