Tasmania’s iconoclastic MONA FOMA (Museum of Old and new Art Festival of Music and Art) – MOFO for extra-short – has unveiled its run of dates for next year in tandem with the announcement the festival’s model will experience a significant shake-up in 2015.
MOFO 2015, to be curated by Brian Ritchie (Violent Femmes, The Break), will inhabit Princes Wharf 1 and surrounding venues from January 15-18, and offer punters a four-day smorgasbord of celebration of all things music and art, from New York post-punk and Japanese girl groups to DJs from Mexico, “guitar orchestras” (that makes no sense, guys), big ol’ inflatable things to look at and interactive sound-art installations.
“We will be going for a sprawling, non-stop, 24-7 experience for MOFO 2015,” Ritchie said in a statement. “Don’t expect to sleep much.”
MOFO is a key event in Tasmania’s tourism calendar, with about 45 per cent of last year’s attendees through the gates having travelled from interstate or overseas to be a part of it, and there’s little wonder why – with promises for 2015 including “bluegrass Bach [aligned] with Bollywood dance music”, “Mongolian throat-singing with avant-garde opera”, “electroclash riot grrrl punk with underwater drumming” and “heavy metal markets with morning meditations”. TL;DR? All you need to know is “yes”.
