Confirmed!

New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi is confirmed to direct and co-write a new Star Wars feature film.

The Raukokore-born director was originally tapped to develop a new film for the iconic franchise earlier this year, however LucasFilm have now confirmed Waititi will now take on the job himself.

Waititi will work on the screenplay alongside Academy Award nominee Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917, Last Night in Soho). A release date for the feature is yet to be announced.

The news comes just months after Waititi won his first Oscar Award (Best Adapted Screenplay) for Jojo Rabbit, following his 2005 nomination for short film, Two Cars, One Night.

Waititi has two other feature films in the works - the forthcoming sequel to Thor: Ragnarok, Thor: Love & Thunder, expected to hit cinemas in early 2022 and Next Goal Wins.

Based on the 2014 documentary of the same name, Next Goal Wins follows the American Samoa national football team, considered the weakest team in the world, and their attempt to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

The film, which also is yet to have a release date, stars Michael Fassbender and Elizabeth Moss.
