16 live music venues and small businesses across Sydney are set for some handy upgrades thanks to more than $265,000 in grant funding from the City Of Sydney.
The grants aim to support and boost Sydney's night-life through the many venues and businesses open after dark.
New vegan brewery, bar and restaurant, Yulli's Brews in Alexandria, is one of the venues set to receive funding, and it will score new sound, lighting and stage equipment to develop it into a live music venue.
“It's been our goal for a while now to provide a quality platform to showcase local talent – supporting art and culture in the community is important to us, as is providing stellar entertainment for our patrons,” Yulli’s Brews' Danielle Psaros said.
“For the few bands we've hosted so far, we were only able to offer a microphone or two and a stage constructed of spare wooden beer pallets!
"The City's support means we will be able to call ourselves a legitimate live music venue and become the cultural hub we always envisioned our space to be.”
Other benefits from the funding include new or upgraded sound equipment for Home nightclub in Darling Harbour, Newtown's Marlborough Hotel and Green Park Hotel in Darlinghurst, new sound and lighting equipment and soundproofing for the famous Leadbelly and a program of monthly events at Oxford Hotel and Club 77, as well as all-ages gigs at 107 Projects in Redfern.
Sound and stage equipment will also be installed at Darlinghurst hot spots, Pocket Bar and The Cliff Dive to create live music spaces at both venues.
“Sydney’s music venues and businesses have come up with exciting new programs and ideas and they will be kick-started by the City through much-needed funding,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.
“Earlier this year, more than 10,000 Sydneysiders, visitors and city workers told us they wanted more and diverse options after dark. These grants support live music at a vintage clothes store, a vegan brewery, writers’ talks at an art gallery and all-ages gigs at 107 Projects."
