Sydney's Campbelltown Stadium will host live music concerts and events should a proposed upgrade to the venue be approved.
As News Corp reports, Campbelltown City Council plans to increase the seating from just over 13,000 to 20,000 within the next five years if Macarthur South West Football club is successful in its bid to enter the A-League competition, which will be its home stadium.
It is expected that a decision will be made ahead of the 2019-2020 season.
In a statement given to The Music, Council's acting director of City Lifestyles, Jenny Franke says their vision is to see the south west Sydney stadium transformed into a "significant sporting, recreation and entertainment destination".
"As part of this vision, the stadium and broader precinct would provide further opportunities to host a range of activities including live events and concerts," Franke said.
"This is one part of Campbelltown City Council’s strategy to provide sporting and entertainment opportunities for current and future residents in one of Australia’s fastest growing regions and provide a venue that is accessible, rather than having to drive over an hour to access entertainment and sports venues in Moore Park, Homebush or Parramatta.
"The accessibility of the Campbelltown Sports Stadium is unrivalled anywhere in Sydney with adjacent public transport options, including a train station within 100m, and access off major road links."
The stadium has played host to a number of NRL and football matches, as well as the Super X live event.
"A future redevelopment of the stadium would be considered following extensive consultation, exploration of funding opportunities and consideration to the needs of our growing community," Franke said.
"Any transformation of the precinct would build on the stadium’s ability and reputation to host a wide range of diverse events."
The upgrade could be timely, given that Allianz Stadium will close for three years for refurbishment and construction, following Michael Buble's headline show at the venue tonight.
