Sydney Bassist Gets Surgery After Freak Accident With Machete

Why doesn't this surprise?

The bassist for Sydney pop-punk band Nerdlinger almost completely lost his thumb after he attempted to open a beer with a machete in New Zealand last month.

As Blunt Mag reports, the band were on tour with local outfit Streetlight Riot and following the gig, Scott McNairn resorted to drastic measures to open a beer in the absence of a bottle opener.

To make matters even more unnecessarily problematic, the beer was in fact a twist top.

"When it slipped from my hand and ran across my thumb it managed to cut to the bone and then some,"McNairn said in a recent Facebook post.

After an ambulance was summoned, McNairn endured an hour-and-a-half drive from Ragland to the nearest hospital in Auckland.

"I’d cut through the tendon in my thumb and was referred to the plastics ward in Auckland."

After getting surgery on his thumb following the freak accident, McNairn rejoined the band on tour and performed strictly on vocals while Streetlight Riot bassist Cameron Brookes stepped in to help out the team.

Now back home, McNairn will be out of action for up to three months as he recovers, while Divider's Paul Anderson has been recruited as the interim bassist for some upcoming Nerdlinger shows.
