Steve SmythSydney-based howl-rock hero Steve Smyth has had to postpone a chunk of his planned tour in support of recent LP Exits after his jaw was broken in an alleged assault in Newtown on Tuesday night.
According to a statement from label Ivy League Records, Smyth was headed home with brother Jake, who owns local food and beverage outlet Mary's, when he was allegedly witness to "an altercation", suffering a broken jaw "after attempting to defuse the situation".
Smyth was taken to Sydney's Royal Prince Albert Hospital for treatment, the statement said (undergoing surgery on his birthday, no less), with the star apparently remaining in good spirits despite the alleged incident. Newtown Police are investigating.
"Ivy League extends love and support to Steve and the entire Smyth family," the label wrote in their statement. "It's awful, but we're proud of you mate."
Prior to the turn of events, Smyth had been about midway through his massive tour in support of recently released full-length Exits, and has now cancelled the shows between October 26 (Wollombi) and November 15 (Taree, NSW); they will be rescheduled upon his recovery, for which estimates currently sit at anywhere between two to six weeks. At the present time, his tour dates from December 9, at Newtown Social Club, onwards remain unchanged.
