Statue In Honour Of Molly Meldrum Unveiled In Melbourne

Australian music legend Ian "Molly" Meldrum has been honoured with his very own statue in Melbourne today. 

The iconic critic appeared at Wangaratta Street Park in Richmond this morning for the unveiling, while a music wall celebrating Australian live music and Meldrum's contribution to the industry was also showcased, featuring acts such as Courtney Barnett, Northlane, Killing Heidi, The Cat Empire and Baker Boy. 

Revered industry figure Michael Gudinski said of Meldrum at the launch, "You’ve encapsulated yourself in Australian culture", while close friend and Channel Nine presenter Eddie McGuire added, "We salute you today my friend and what an honour it is.

"You have cast a shadow so long on this community for so many years."

Meldrum was predictably humble when addressing the crowd and joked, "I’m lying in bed and I’m thinking how can I get out of this one".

The famous Countdown host added that he would only accept the honour if he could have his beloved pet dog Ziggy "in my arms when I do this".

He finished his speech by thanking the crowd and the community, visibly moved by the crowd turnout and the occasion.
